Dedicated to Education

The Modern and Classical Language Association of Southern California (MCLASC) provides a variety of professionally enriching opportunities for language teachers in Los Angeles County. We are also the local affiliate of the California Language Teachers Association (CLTA).

How did we start?

MCLASC was founded in 1910 and began as the Southern California chapter of the Modern Language Association (MLA). It later added the C to include Classical languages such as Greek and Latin. In 2010, MCLASC celebrated its 100-year anniversary.

In the early 1900s, there were only two foreign language associations in California; FLANC in Northern California and MCLASC in Southern California. We preceeded CFLTA, now known as CLTA (California Language Teachers Association), which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009. Today, MCLASC is an affiliate of CLTA.

What do we do?

MCLASC is the local, professional, service organization for teachers of all languages and levels (K-16) in the county of Los Angeles. Language Teachers from all areas of California, as well as other states, are welcomed to attend MCLASC events.

Activities include our annual Fall Conference, Spring Workshop, free technology tutorials, Japanese Workshop, and French Poetry Contest. We provide scholarship opportunities for students, grants for teachers, host a Student Recognition Ceremony, and a Member Brunch.

In recent years we have also offered free workshops for new foreign language teachers, and a Language Immersion Day at CSULA for teachers to converse in the target language on current topics of interest.
